A dangerous boy, an abandoned dog and one girl’s perilous road trip to personal growth. Meet Kate.

Celebrated children’s books illustrator, Kevin Burgemeestre is debuting his first novel: ‘Kate’, a young adult  novel set in Australia. Released this month by Morris Publishing Australia, 'Kate' will be launched by Hazel Edwards OAM at The Little Bookroom – North Carlton at 6pm, 20 November 2013.

This is a story of growth and mistakes. Kate’s lucky to find Wilde, a battered, heroic hound she rescues from the streets, and Mal a troubled young man with a dark past. When things go really wrong they’ll need each other and they’ll have to run!

“We cosset our children, and try to protect them from so much of the outside world, but in the process we give them fewer opportunities to stretch their wings” explains author Kevin Burgemeestre. “It’s a pity because, as Kate demonstrates we derive wisdom from our mistakes, and with a touch of luck we gain joy from adventure”.

Kate contains illustrations by Kevin, which were exhibited at Stonnington Literature Alive earlier this year. An artwork will be auctioned at the launch and all proceeds donated to the Lost Dogs Home in North Melbourne.

  • Kevin is available for interview.
  • Excerpts from ‘Kate’ as well as original illustrations can be found at:
  • A copy of 'Kate' is available to be posted to journalists for media review

Kate dug her hands deep into the pockets of her hoodie and sniffed; she hated how the cold weather made her nose run so freely. Her eye caught a motor-oil rainbow shimmering across the soft sheen on the damp asphalt and wondered briefly how it was that ugly things could sometimes appear so beautiful.
